Formal Party

What type of food can be at a formal party?

I am writing a story and they are at a formal party, but I was wondering what types of food could be there?

Becca, I think that some of the previous posters were trying to have a little cruel fun at your expense, and I hope that effort wasn't getting anywhere with you. Chicken wings and any other sort of messy finger food would be out of the question at a formal dinner party, and so would the creation of a "buffet" or "standing around" while one eats.

Suitcoats are cumbersome things to wear - to juggle one's dishes as others pass while wearing such a garment is not a good time for anybody. One sits down, and as far as formalwear and the prohibition against resting one's arms on the table will allow, one relaxes. A formal dinner party might have a line up more like this one:

1. Hors d'oevres or antipasto - small dishes, probably served cold, warm hors d'oevres having gone out of fashion a little over a hundred years ago, and with good reason. While one is attending one dish, the sauce on the other may well be curdling - serving those little dishes warm is an invitation to disaster, even if nobody decides to arrive "fashionably late".

Somebody always does that.

2. A soup course - or perhaps pasta, polenta or risotto, if one's preference is for Italian dining.

3. A seafood course.

4. A meat course. (Not the reverse, the seafood being lighter than the meat).

5. Maybe a vegetable course.

6. A little fresh fruit and cheese, followed by a few afterdinner drinks, perhaps a choice of liqueurs. Then, after dinner has had an hour or two to settle, a desert might be offered.

So, perhaps something like this, following the appetizers ...

a simple, clear consomme

baked oysters with sorrel butter

chicken with ham and mushrooms in a white wine, tomato and cream sauce, gratineed with Emmenthaler cheese

fava beans sauteed in butter with mint

fennel and potato puree, perhaps stuffed into hollowed braised fennel for textural contrast

or some other combination; that one I just threw together on the spot, and it might not work, but I think it would. Find a copy of something called "The Escoffier Cookbook", and you'll have a small tome worth of formal dinner suggestions. None of which will involve sticking party sausages on skewers with cheese and pineapples.
