How do I make a patchwork quilt?

I have been watching Kirsties Homemade Home and would love to make a patchwork quilt. I am in no hurry at all and it'll probably take me a year or so as i'll pick it up and leave it now and again. I can only do a running stitch, and probably not even that well haha but I am sure it will improve as I have a go.

I wan't to get all greens /light yellows/ possible a few light pink/blues and whites. Do I sew them onto a quilt or do I sew them together than put a backing on it? I want to applique it with birds and rabbits in the same sorts of colours once I have the patches all sewn together.
I think i'd do diagonals in the colours (not not necessarily the same material, just a general colour theme) so a diaganol of yellow, then green, then a paler yellow, then maybe a pinky one, then green etc etc...

There's a bunch of info for beginner quilters in answers I've given before if you want to check them out:

It sounds like what you want to do is to "piece" a "top," then make a quilt sandwich from the top, some batting, and a "back" (usually one large piece of fabric).
Then you have you choice of how you want to stitch through all 3 layers to hold them together and keep the batting from bunching/etc...you can "tie" the sandwich (easiest), or you can hand-quilt or machine-quilt the sandwich.
You can also put on a "binding" around the raw edges of the quilt sandwich, or you could have used the "inside-out" or "quick-turn" method to do the sandwich from the 3 parts instead.

Since it sounds like you want to both "piece" the quilt and "applique" some things on it, you can do the appliques on the finished quilt or you could first do them on separate "blocks" of the pieced quilt top then join the finished top with the binding and backing to make the quilt sandwich.
